Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

Des Moines, IA - Brett Jackson blasted a walk-off three-run home run to cap off a five-run eighth inning rally that lifted Iowa to a seemingly improbable 7-4 comeback win over Omaha Tuesday night in the second game of a day-night doubleheader at Principal Park. The Storm Chasers were swept in the twin bill and have lost four in a row to fall to 44-41 and two and a half games behind the Cubs in the American Conference North Division. Omaha has lost 15 of the last 17 games across the state border in the I-80 rivalry dating back to the 2012 season.

Armando Rivero retired the first four hitters he faced before Omaha's Jimmy Paredes doubled with one out in the extra frame and stole third base. Peguero then drove a 2-1 pitch high over the wall in right field to snap a 2-2 tie for his third home run in five games since returning from the disabled list on Saturday. Ramon Troncoso, who had thrown scoreless relief for the visitors in the sixth and seventh innings, got himself into trouble immediately in the bottom of the inning by walking the leadoff hitter Javy Baez and yielding a base to Chris Valaika that sent Baez to third, from where he scored on an infield hit by Kris Bryant to make it 4-3. Following a Rafael Lopez sacrifice bunt, Matt Szczur legged out an infield hit that plated Valaika to tie the game and push Bryant to third. Szczur advanced to second base on defensive indifference before Troncoso struck out Logan Watkins for the second out and was lifted in favor of Spencer Patton. The right-hander fell behind in the count 2-0 and saw Jackson slam his next offering over the wall in right field to give the hosts their fourth consecutive victory.

The Storm Chasers scored first for the seventh straight game when Whit Merrifield doubled to drive in Logan Davis in the third inning and added to their lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Francisco Pena. Both runs were charged to Zak Hermans, who lasted 3 1/3 innings in his Triple-A debut, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out two. Alberto Cabrera took over and kept the visitors hitless over 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Iowa received run-scoring hits from Bryant and Szczur in the fourth to get the game evened up and looked poised to take the lead in the fifth after loading the bases with nobody out. Omaha starter Clay Mortensen did a tremendous job working his way out of the jam by getting Baez to pop up, striking out Valaika and getting Bryant to fly out to keep the game tied. The veteran right-hander finished his five frames yielding six hits, walking three and fanning six.

The series continues Wednesday night with Omaha left-hander Ryan Verdugo taking the hill against Iowa southpaw Chris Rusin. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
