Comeback Bid Falls Short in 9-7 Loss

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox built a six-run lead through five innings and were able to withstand a late rally by the Oklahoma City RedHawks before winning 9-7 at Security Service Field Tuesday night.

For the first time in seven games, the RedHawks scored first. They took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Marc Krauss drew a walk and Matt Duffy followed with a triple.

The Sky Sox used a big inning in the bottom of the second to take the lead. The Sky Sox began the inning with four straight hits, and each runner eventually scored to make it 4-1. Jackson Williams tied the game with a RBI double, and Evan Frey followed with a go-ahead RBI single.

Drew Garcia laid down a bunt to score Williams, and Frey scored on a wild pitch with two outs.

The RedHawks cut into the lead in the fourth inning. Preston Tucker led off the inning with a double, and following a couple of groundouts, Carlos Perez produced a RBI infield single to make it 4-2.

However, the Sky Sox would answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Ben Paulsen hit a two-run double to deep left field with two outs, giving the Sky Sox a 6-2 advantage.

Colorado Springs extended the lead in the fifth. The Sky Sox loaded the bases with nobody out, and Frey hit a two-run double on an 0-2 pitch to push the lead to 8-2.

The RedHawks scored three times in the seventh. They loaded the bases with nobody out, and Robbie Grossman was hit by a pitch to score the inning's first run. Austin Wates then drew a walk to make it 8-4.

After a couple of strikeouts, Tucker drew another bases-loaded to cut the deficit to three.

The RedHawks continued their rally in the eighth. An error by Garcia allowed a run to score, and Grossman followed with a RBI single to make it a one-run game.

With runners at first and second and nobody out, Wates put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. However, Sky Sox reliever Chris Martin struck out both Krauss and Duffy to keep the tying run stranded at third.

Colorado Springs tallied another run in the eighth with a RBI double by Nolan Arenado.

Max Stassi kept the game alive with a two-out double in the ninth, bringing Perez to the plate as the tying run. Sky Sox closer Brooks Brown got Perez to ground out to end the game, as Brooks collected his sixth win of the season.

On the day the RedHawks lost both Domingo Santana and Kiké Hernandez to promotions to Houston, the offense still put up seven runs and 12 hits. Perez finished with a game-high and season-high four hits, while Stassi added three hits.

Juan Nicasio earned the win for the Sky Sox, allowing two runs and five hits over five-plus innings. Nicasio (2-1) recorded four strikeouts and four walks.

RedHawks starting pitcher David Martinez had a tough night, lasting just four-plus innings. He tied a season high with eight runs on a season high 11 hits. Martinez (5-6) walked two and struck out two.
