Lake Erie Crushers News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Lake Erie Crushers scored six out of their eight runs with two outs on Friday evening, as they set season highs with eight runs and 12 hits, in an 8-2 victory over Rockford.
The Crushers (3-4) tallied seven hits with two outs on the evening, and 13 out of their 15 runs scored on this trip have come with two outs. The loss for the Riverhawks (1-6) extends their losing streak to five.
For the third time on the trip, the Crushers got on the board first. Brandon Decker reached on a one out single, and scored on Andrew Davis's double off the wall in right-center. The Riverhawks answered in the bottom of the inning, when Evan Button scored on a wild pitch.
The contest remained tied, until Decker, Davis and Russ Moldenhauer strung together three consecutive two out singles in the fifth. Moldenhauer's base hit brought Decker home to give the Crushers the lead.
Another two out hit added to Lake Erie's lead in the sixth. Gered Mochizuki reached on a free pass, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a single from Adrian Ortiz.
The Crushers added another in the seventh inning and put the game away with a four-run eighth. Robby Kuzdale's sacrifice fly scored Moldenhauer in the seventh. Kuzdale struck again in the eighth inning, with a bases clearing, two-out double to plate three runs. Kyle Weldon drove Kuzdale home moments later on a base hit.
An errant throw by Mochizuki in the eighth inning allowed the Riverhawks to score their final run.
Eight out of the starting nine reached safely for the Crushers, and six players reached multiple times. Kuzdale knocked in four runs in two plate appearances, while Moldenhauer went 3-for-4, with two runs and an RBI.
Randy Sturgill (1-0) earned the victory, tossing two-thirds of an inning. He retired the only two batters he faced in the fifth. Chance Gilmore (1) earned the save, allowing just an unearned run on one hit over two and two-thirds. Cody Hallahan (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings of action.
The Crushers will continue their three game series with the Rockford Riverhawks, at Riverhawks Stadium on Saturday night. Right hander Nick Sarianides (0-1, 7.36) will start for the Riverhawks. The Crushers starting pitcher has not been announced. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
