LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks have signed a local product.

The RiverHawks announced Friday that they have signed pitcher Ziggie VanderWall. VanderWall, 22, is a true rookie out of Southern Arkansas University and a Guilford High School alumnus.

VanderWall was 2-0 with a 9.53 earned-run average in eight appearances, five as a starter, this spring. The left-hander struck out 18 and walked 14 in 17 innings.

In other moves on Friday, the RiverHawks activated utility man Greg Van Horn from the disabled list, placed pitcher Alex Szymanski on the seven-day DL and released pitcher Scott Kelley.

VanHorn began the season on the DL because of a wrist injury. Szymanski left Thursday's start at Florence in the second inning because of elbow soreness. Kelley gave up six runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings on Wednesday in his only appearance.

The RiverHawks' home opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday against Lake Erie. The Power Connection sponsors a postgame fireworks extravaganza.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league in its 20th season. Games are broadcast live on WNTA (100.5 FM). Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
