Rippers Open Labatt Park with Win

LONDON, ONTARIO - It was home sweet home for the London Rippers, as they won their first home game in team history at Labatt Park, 4-3 over the Gateway Grizzlies.

London (2-5) got off to a fast start again, putting up an unearned run in the 2nd inning on two singles, an error and a fielder's choice, tying the game at 1-1.

Two more singles and an error produced London's second run to start the bottom of the 3rd, followed by a groundout by Jim Vahalik to get Mark Samuelson home, putting the Rippers ahead, 3-1.

Gateway put their best inning together in the 6th, when three straight singles brought home Richie Jimenez Jr. and Jonathon Johnson, knotting the score at 3-3.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the 8th . Jim Vahalik singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt by Clifton Thomas.

With Matt Wright at the plate, Vahalik took 3rd on a passed ball by Grizzlies' catcher, Sam Mahoney, then came home when Mahoney threw wide of 3rd base.

Starter, Jamie Richmond (1-1) was outstanding, pitching 8 complete innings, allowing 8 hits and three runs, while striking out 6.

David Francis pitched a perfect 9th to record his first save of the season.

The announced attendance was 2,764 at Labatt Park.

The Rippers and Grizzles renew their rivalry tomorrow night at Labatt Park. Game time is 7pm. Tickets are available at the Team Store or by calling 519-645-1800.
