River City Rascals News Release
Washington, Pa. - River City starter Preston Vancil pitched six innings and allowed just one run one five hits with five strikeouts and the Rascals' offense took advantage of seven walks en-route to a 4-1 win over the Washington WildThings in front of a sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Park. The win, with the Windy City loss at Traverse City, give the Rascals sole possession of first place in the West Division.
Leadoff hitter Eric Williams set the table all night for the Rascals (6-1) who took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the third from Jeremy Synan following consecutive hits from Williams and Serna, who stung a double down the right field line.
Washington plated their lone run in the fourth with back-to-back two-out hits from Mitch Denning and Trevor Pippen who picked up the RBI after the Denning double.
Synan tripled with one out following a walk to Matt Serna in the seventh that scored the second baseman before an errant throw allowed Synan to pop up at third and scamper home for the 4-1 lead.
Brandon Cunniff, who had given up nine hits in 2 2/3 innings of work during the homestand, pitched two flawless innings to hold the lead, striking out three without allowing a hit. Dustin Umberger allowed a leadoff single to start the ninth before striking out the side for his third save in three-straight games.
River City is back in action tomorrow night with first pitch at 6:05. Keli'i Zablan (1-0, 5.40) makes his first ever start and will be opposed by Washington's Chris Smith (0-0, 2.70). You can hear the action live on Westplex News-Talk 1280AM or online at westplexnewstalk.com.
