Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, welcomed a sell-out crowd to CONSOL Energy Park on Friday night, but dropped the first of three games against the River City Rascals 4-1. The Wild Things are tied for first place in East Division
River City started off the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third by right fielder Jeremy Synan, scoring left fielder Eric Williams.
Starting pitcher Alan Gatz showed resilience early, as Jareck West lined a ball back to Gatz that ricocheted off his pitching arm. Gatz stuck with it and completed the play by tossing it to first left-handed. Gatz made it out of the inning, but left the ball game down 1-0.
The Wild Things responded in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 1-1. They got on the board after a two-out single to right by left fielder Trevor Pippin brought in right fielder Mitch Dening from second.
Shawn Smith replaced Gatz in the top of the fifth. Gatz allowed one run on three hits and struck out two in four innings of work.
Smith went on to start the top of the sixth inning in a 2-1 ballgame, but was replaced by Nick Schreiber after a leadoff walk to Josh Workman. Schreiber went on to strand Workman as he worked his way out of the inning with no damage.
The Rascals added two runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 4-1, which would stand as the final score.
The Wild Things tried to answer in the bottom of the seventh, as Pippin led off with a double. River City's relief pitcher, Brandon Cunniff, inherited the runner after he replaced starter Preston Vancil, and went on to retire the next three batters to end the threat. Vancil allowed one run on five hits while striking out five in six innings of work.
The Wild Things' homestand continues Saturday night when they host River
City for game two of the three game series. As a part of Legends' Week, TNA star Robbie E. visits the House of Thrills. Tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting www.washingtonwildthings.com, the CONSOL Energy Park box office or by calling 1-866-456-WILD.
