JOLIET SLAMMERS (2-5) vs. EVANSVILLE OTTERS (3-3)

Friday, May 25 - 7:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #8 - Home Game #4 (2-5), (1-2)

RHP #47 Jeremy Tietze (0-1, 16.62 ERA) vs. LHP #25 Matt Crim (0-0, 1.80 ERA)

Last time out.

The Joliet Slammers finally broke their four-game losing streak at Silver Cross Field on Thursday night in a 4-1 win over the Traverse City Beach Bums in the final game of the series. Steven Maxwell threw a scoreless seven-inning gem in his second start for the Slammers, while striking out 10 Beach Bums, tying the team record for strike outs in a game. Joliet jumped out early when Hector Pellot slapped a double into the outfield to bring Abel Nieves around. With the 1-0 lead, the Slammers picked up insurance in the third when Nieves singled to bring around Trevor Willis, who had reached third on an overthrown pickoff by Bums' pitcher Bennett Whitmore. Joliet took the 2-0 lead into the fifth where they picked up another pair of runs. Erik Lis put a ground ball into play, allowing Ben Hewett to score from third. Two batters later, Kyle Maunus slugged an RBI double to make it 4-0.

For Starters.

RHP Jeremy Tietze is coming off a rough first start of the season against the Gateway Grizzlies in Sauget. He gave up four runs to the Grizzlies in the first inning, with Landon Hernandez hitting a three-run home run to cap the scoring. He settled down after that until the fifth when he gave up four more runs, climaxing again with a three-run homer from Hernandez. He took the loss as the Slammers fell 8-4.Tietze started his professional career in 2011 with the Slammers in the bullpen but pitched so well the team moved him to the starting rotation near the end of the season. He finished the regular season with a 7-1 record in 32 appearances, three of them starts. Then in the postseason he went 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in two starts. The Slammers won both his outings in the playoffs.

To the max.

Rookie Steven Maxwell's seven shutout innings last night against Traverse City was the longest outing of the year for a Slammers starting pitcher. His 10 K's matched the franchise record for strike outs in one game, set by Kevin Crimmel last season.

Getting on base..

The Slammers have done a good job early in the 2012 season getting men on base as they rank second in the Frontier League with a .353 OBP.

Lucky number seven.

Catcher Ben Hewett is the only Slammers player to hit safely in all seven games the team has played. He is hitting .421 (second in the league) with four walks and two RBI.

Near the top.

Outfielder Zach Mandelblatt's two home runs in seven RBI rank tied for third and fourth in the league respectively.

The Rookies.

Thursday was the first game of the year that rookie outfielders Trevor Willis and Jimmy Waters both started. Willis went 1-2 with a run scored and a BB while Waters went 0-2 with a BB.

Erroneous!

The Slammers have surrendered the most unearned runs in the league (16) while committing nine errors on the season (tied for fourth most in the league).

Movin' on up!

RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.

Transaction Wire.

The Slammers placed RHP #33 Jake Renshaw on the 14-Day Disabled List before tonight's game. No corresponding move was made at this time.
