Crushers surrender four homers in 8-1 loss

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford Riverhawks belted four homeruns in Saturday's contest, and snapped a five game losing streak with an 8-1 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers.

The Crushers (3-5) left 10 runners on the base in the loss, leaving the bases loaded twice, while the Riverhawks (2-6) scored their first victory in a week.

Rockford broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning. Lake Erie starter Sam Strickland (0-1) retired the first two batters of the inning, before allowing a base hit to Evan Button. Javier Herrera followed with a two-run blast to left field.

The Riverhawks added to their advantage in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from Daniel Gonzalez, and took a 4-0 lead in the fifth on a solo shot from Matt Greener.

Rockford put the game away by scoring four times on three hits in the sixth inning. Two of those three hits were homeruns. Jet Butler began the inning with a solo shot, and Greener struck again with two on and two out, with a three-run shot to left.

The Crushers plated their only run in the seventh. Brandon Decker reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Robby Kuzdale to score.

Lake Erie also hit into a pair of inning ending double plays. Nick Sarianides (1-1) struck Kuzdale out to end a bases loaded threat in the fourth inning, and Rob Currie fanned Kellen Kulbacki with the bases full of Crushers to end the seventh.

Five players reached safely multiple times for the Crushers. Decker and Andrew Davis both hit safely multiple times. Davis paced the Crushers with a trio of singles, in a 3-for-4 performance, while Decker went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles.

Sarianides scored the victory for Rockford, tossing six scoreless innings, and struck out six batters while allowing six hits. Strickland took the loss in his Crushers' debut. He went five innings, and allowed four runs, three earned on five hits and struck out one.

The Crushers will finish their three game series with the Rockford Riverhawks, at Riverhawks Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Right hander Trevor Longfellow (1-0, 0.00) will start for the Crushers, and the Riverhawks will counter with left hander Kevin Patterson (0-1, 3.86). The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM.
