Slammers Win First Series of 2012

(Joliet, IL) - After losing four straight in the season's early going, the Slammers have now won three consecutive contests with Saturday's 5-1 win over the Evansville Otters. The win marks the first time in 2012 Joliet has won a series, after dropping opening night to Windy City and three-gamers to Gateway and Traverse City.

The Otters got started in the third when Steven Garcia was hit by a pitch and advanced into scoring position on a Matt Sheely single. With two outs in the inning, Alex Foltz singled into the gap to make it 1-0.

In the bottom of the inning, Joliet took a 2-1 lead. Trey Manz reached base when he was plunked by Evansville starter Garrett Bullock, and came around to score when Abel Nieves singled, followed by an RBI double from Hector Pellot.

It would stay 2-1 until the sixth inning when David Fox came to the plate with the bases loaded. With Pellot on third, Erik Lis on second, and Kyle Maunus on first, Fox slammed a bases-clearing double off the left field wall to make it 5-1 Joliet.

In his first game with the team, Eric Binder started and picked up the win for the Slammers, tossing six innings of one-run baseball while fanning seven and walking just one. Jim Schult entered in the seventh, and Amalio Diaz threw the ninth.

The Slammers wrap up their series with the Otters on Sunday at Silver Cross Field at Bark in the Park Day, where fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the game, first pitch is scheduled for 2:05pm.
