Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Jacob Clem tossed six shutout innings in his first professional start and the Beach Bums provided him with a trio of early runs as the Traverse City Beach Bums took their second game in a row from the Windy City ThunderBolts, winning 3-0 on Saturday night.
The Beach Bums opened the scoring in the second inning when Jeff Flagg took a Ricky Szeligo pitch over the centerfield wall for his fourth homerun of the season and a 1-0 TC lead.
Traverse City would add to the lead in the third when Kyle Eveland led off with a walk followed by a bunt single by Brian Heere. A Kyle Colligan flyout moved Eveland to third and put runners on the corners with Jose Vargas stepping to the plate. Vargas hit a rocket off the glove of the third baseman for an RBI single, bringing home Eveland and moving Heere to second. Chase Burch was up next and lined a ball back through the box for a single to score Heere and make it 3-0.
That was all the offense the Beach Bums would need as Jacob Clem and the bullpen did the rest. After bit of a rough first inning Clem (1-0) settled in to throw six shutout innings, giving up just three hits and striking out three. Sam Brown came on in the seventh and tossed two scoreless innings before Scott Mueller closed the door in the ninth for his third save. Szeligo (0-1) took the loss for Windy City.
Offensively, the Beach Bums pounded out eight hits including two each from Heere and Flagg.
The series wraps up tomorrow with Reid Kelly (2-0, 3.00) on the mound for Traverse City against Stephen Sauer (0-0, 2.25) for the ThunderBolts. It is a Family FUNday Sunday and Sprit Night at the ballpark. Thunder sticks will be handed out to the first fans through the gates. Kids tickets are half price with the purchase of an adult chairback seat and children ages 5-12 can run the bases after the game. There will also be a full-team postgame autograph session.
