CornBelters Blanked by Miners

Normal CornBelters News Release

Normal, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, couldn't warm up the bats on a sizzling afternoon at the Corn Crib, falling 9-0 to the Southern Illinois Miners.

Tempers flared early as 'Belters' manager Chad Parker was ejected during the third batter of the game after disputing two separate calls with umpires. Two pitches later Miner centerfielder Chad Maddox sent a two-run shot over the wall in left to give Southern Illinois the early advantage.

Maddox pushed the Miners' lead to three runs in the 3rd when his sacrifice fly brought Darien Sandford home. The Miners added three more runs in the 5th and 8th respectively, making the score 9-0.

Normal struggled to get anything going offensively, managing just two hits on the day. Southern Illinois's Shawn Gilblair (1-0) got the win, while Elio Briones (0-1) took the loss for the hosts.

The 'Belters will wrap up the series Sunday at 5:00 p.m. at the Corn Crib. Daniel Britt (0-1, 7.50 ERA) will take the ball for the CornBelters facing off against the Miners' Thomas Campbell (0-1, 7.60 ERA). Pre-game on WJBC.com is at 4:50.

Sunday is Frontier Family Funday. Fans can enjoy the "Frontier Family 4 Pack," 4 hot dogs, 4 sodas, and 4 box seats for just $40. Fans are invited to play catch on the field before the game, too.

The Normal CornBelters and Community Cancer Center have teamed up to host the third annual "Cancer Survivors Night." Participants unite in a symbolic event to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality. The 'Belters look forward to celebrating life with those who have already beaten and those currently battling cancer.
