Crushers suffer first shutout loss of the season

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- The Traverse City Beach Bums dealt the Lake Erie Crushers their first shutout loss of the season, as the Beach Bums came away with a 1-0 victory in the second game of the series on Wednesday night.

For Lake Erie (6-11) the loss was their fourth in a row, and their fifth one-run loss of the season, while the victory for the Beach Bums (10-7) was their fifth in a row at home.

The starting pitchers stole the show. Alex Kaminsky (1-2) had a phenomenal outing for the Crushers, despite the loss. He allowed just a run on four hits over seven incredible innings of work, and struck out five along the way.

Traverse City's Jake Sabol (4-0) was the star of the night, as he delivered his second complete game shutout of the season, to win his fourth game in as many tries. He went the distance, and allowed just five hits, only one for extra bases, and at one point, retired 13 consecutive hitters.

Lake Erie didn't have many chances to score. In the second inning, Anderson Hidalgo led off with a double, and made his way to third base, but Sabol worked his way out of the jam by inducing a pair of groundouts to keep the Crushers off the board.

The Crushers left a pair on in the seventh inning as well. Hidalgo walked with one down, and made his way over to second on a two out infield single from Seth Granger, but Sabol ended that threat by inducing another groundout.

The Beach Bums used the long ball to score the only run of the night. Taylor Wrenn, who went deep the night before, smacked the first pitch of the fourth inning over the wall in right, to count for the game's only run. It was his second of the season, and Traverse City's third of the series.

Hidalgo gave the Crushers one last hope in the top of the ninth. He reached on a two out single through the left side of the infield, putting the tying run on, but Sabol responded by retiring Emmanuel Quiles on a groundout to end the game.

Hidalgo went 2-for-3 on the night, and reached three times in four plate appearances to lead the Lake Erie offense. Andrew Davis stroked a single in his first at bat to extend his hitting streak to seven games.

The Crushers will finish their three game series against the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park on Thursday evening. The Crushers will start left hander Dave Middendorf (1-1, 2.70) and the Beach Bums will start right hander Mike Divine (0-0, 1.59). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
