Rockford Aviators News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - In the longest game of the young season, the Normal CornBelters outlasted the Rockford Aviators, 3-2, in 16 innings at Aviator Stadium on Tuesday night. Normal's T.J. Gavlik came up with the anti-climactic, yet decisive blow on an RBI groundout to second base in the top half of the 16th frame.
Trevor Harden pitched as well as he had all year, tossing 7.1 innings and striking out eight, while allowing only two runs on six hits.
Trailing 2-1 heading to the bottom of the ninth, Chase Larsson blasted his first home run of the season over the left field wall. From there, each team's bullpens took center stage.
During innings 10-15, Rockford's bullpen combined to allow only two base hits. Normal's bullpen matched the Aviators step for step, however. The home squad had a chance to win it in the bottom of the 14th with runners at second and third and two outs, but Ted Obregon's ground out to second ended the threat.
The loss was Rockford's 13th consecutive defeat and its eighth 1-run loss of the season. The series with Normal continues tomorrow night at 7:05 with Rockford's Jon Gulbransen (0-1, 1.50) and Normal's Jose Trinidad (3-0, 2.84) scheduled to pitch.
