Sandford and 15 Hits lead Wild Things to 8-0 Win

Washington, Pa.- It was a song of fire and ice as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, pummeled the Frontier Greys with a 8-0 win on Wednesday at CONSOL Energy Park.

The fire was the Wild Things' (11-6) bats that collected 15 hits, all but one starter collected a hit. Third baseman Jovan Rosa lead the way with a 3-for-5 night where he hit a double, homerun and cashed in three RBI. Catcher Maxx Garrett was also impressive, he was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI.

The ice was starter Shawn Sanford (3-0) who shut down the Greys (7-10) lineup. He worked eight scoreless innings of three hit ball, striking out seven and walking three.

Scoring opened in the bottom of the fourth, Washington had runners on the corners and one out when Greys starter Matt Costello (0-1) made a throwing error on his pick-off attempt at first. This scored second baseman C.J. Beatty, and advanced first baseman Jim Vahalik to third. Two batters later, Vahalik touched home when Garrett launched a triple to the right centerfield gap, and giving the Wild Things a 2-0 lead.

Washington expanded to their lead by adding four more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Rosa drove in his ninth RBI of 2013 with a double into right centerfield scoring left fielder Shain Stoner . The Wild Things used some two out magic to score the next four runs. Vahalik hit a single on the left side, off submarine reliever Justin Yackee, to score Rosa for his fourth RBI. After a right fielder Nick Akin single, Garrett would single into the third base/shortstop gap scoring Vahalik and Akins for two of his three RBI on the night. This made it a 6-0 game.

Continuing his hot day at plate, Rosa hit his first homer of the year when he absolutely crushed a Yackee offering into the CONSOL Energy Park right field parking lot for a two-run home run that pushed the lead to 8-0.

In the top of inning number six, Frontier Greys third baseman Brock McCallister looked like he had himself an inside-the-park home run, but great teamwork by centerfielder Darian Sandford, shortstop AJ Nunziato and Garrett was able to McCallister out a home.

Newly signed reliever Zach Fleshman made his Wild Thing debut in the top of the ninth, replacing Sanford. He worked a scoreless inning, striking out one and hitting a batter.

The Wild Things and Frontier Greys will have the rubber match of this series on Thursday at CONSOL Energy Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online at www.washingtonwildthings.com or by stopping at the CONSOL Energy Park Box Office.
