Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers saw their three game winning streak come to an end on Saturday evening at All Pro Freight Stadium, as the Joliet Slammers scored twice in the 10th inning without recording a hit to score a 3-1 victory.
For Lake Erie (6-8) the loss dropped their record to 1-1 in extra inning games, while the victory for the Slammers (5-9) snapped a six game losing streak.
Despite the free passes in the 10th inning, the pitching was fantastic on both sides, especially from the starters. Lake Erie lefty Dave Middendorf tossed 7.2 innings, and allowed just a run on six hits while fanning four along the way. Joliet's Jacob Sanchez tossed eight innings, and allowed a run on four hits while striking out 10.
Lake Erie scored first, with a big two-out extra base hit in the bottom of the third. David Roney started the inning with a base hit, and made his way to second on Juan Sanchez's sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Gauntlett Eldemire belted a double down the left field line to score Roney and give the Crushers the lead.
The Slammers stranded several runners throughout the night, but finally scored in the eighth inning. Marquis Riley walked with one out in the inning, stole second base, and made his way to third on Nate Wilder's groundout. Grant DeBruin then hit a ground ball down the third base line. Andrew Davis made a great diving stop, but his throw to first was just a little late, which allowed Riley to score, and tie the game.
Joliet scored a pair of runs on four free passes in the 10th inning to win the game. Ben Hewett started the inning with a free pass, and Riley's sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Jordan Wellander (0-2) was then relieved by Ricky Bowen, who walked the next three batters, walking in the go ahead run, when he issued a free pass to David Christensen with the bases loaded. Michael Wing drove in the final run on a sacrifice fly.
Wellander allowed a run on two hits over 1.2 innings of action, and suffered the loss. Chase Doremus (1-0) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to score the victory, and Justin Erasmus kept the Crushers off the board in the 10th to earn the save.
The Crushers were held to five hits on the night, and have 11 in the first two games of the series. Russ Moldenhauer went 0-for-4 on the night, and saw his 13 game on base streak come to an end, while Anderson Hidalgo went 0-for-4, bringing his nine game hitting streak to an end as well.
The Crushers will finish their three game series against the Joliet Slammers at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday evening. The Crushers will start lefty Matt Rein (1-1, 2.50) and the Slammers will start left hander Corey Kimes (1-1, 3.37). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
