Offense Powers Miners to Win

Marion, IL - The Miners scored tweleve runs off 18 hits, which tied a team record to defeat the Frontier Greys 12-2 on Saturday night. The Miners got a solid start from pitcher Preston Vancil who made his Miners debut. He pitched five innings and struck out four batters while allowing two runs (one earned) to earn his first victory as a Miner. Travis Bradshaw pitched four innings to earn his first save in relief in his Miners debut and struck out five batters.

The Miners scored four runs off Greys starter Eric Wooten in the bottom of the third inning. Shortstop Tyler Stubblefield hit into a fielder's choice to score two runners and first baseman Gerardo Avila hit a base hit to score Stubblefield. Outfielder Ken Gregory hit a base hit to score Avila to cap off the inning to give the Miners a 4-0 lead.

With the Greys getting on the board in the top of the fourth inning off Miners starter Vancil, the Miners scored three runs off Wooten in the bottom of the fourth inning. Catcher Mario Mercedes scored on a past ball and Stubblfield hit a two RBI base hit to give Southern Illinois a 7-1 lead. The Frontier Greys added a run off Vancil (unearned) to bring themselves within five runs, 7-2.

The Miners scored five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they recorded seven hits. Stubblefield led off the inning with a triple and would score on a base hit from Gerardo Avila. Ken Gregory would hit a two RBI double to score Avila and Carlos Mendez to give Southern Illinois a 10-2 lead. Mario Mercedes would hit a sacrifice fly to score Ken Gregory to give the Miners a 11-2 lead. Carlos Colmenares scored the final run of the inning on a double by center fielder Tyler Hall to give the Miners a 12-2 lead.

With the win, the Miners improved to 8-6 on the season. The Miners and Frontier Greys wrap up the series tomorrow night at Rent One Park. First pitch is at 5:05 pm.
