Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Marion, Illinois-The Lake Erie Crushers beat the Southern Illinois Miners, 3-2 in ten innings at Rent One Park as the Crushers come back with a two run home run in the seventh to tie the game and an RBI single in the tenth to win the game.
With the win, the Crushers (36-50) avoid being swept and snap a seven game losing streak. The loss for the Miners (58-29) ends a six game winning streak and is only the Miners third loss in their previous ten games.
The Miners started the back and forth scoring in the first inning. With Daniel DeSimone making his first start since 2013, Aaron Gates singled with one out and moved to third on a single by Michael Earley. Frank Martinez then singled to score Gates but Earley was out trying to advance to third. The Miners would strand Martinez on third.
Jerrud Sabourin led off the second inning with a single and with one out, Brian Portelli hit a double to left center that scored Sabourin. DeSimone was able to get through the inning and the Miners stranded Portelli at second.
Neither team scored until the seventh inning when the Crushers came up swinging. Jarett Miller had only given up one hit to the Crushers until Jose Barraza hit a double down the left field line to lead off the inning. With one out, Juan Sanchez then came up and hit a sinking line drive to center. The center fielder, Gates, slid to try to make a catch but the ball bounced under his mitt and all the way to the wall. Barraza scored and Sanchez came all the way around for an inside-the-park home run.
In the top of the tenth inning, Daniel Aldrich was walked by Scott Harkin. With one out, Chandler Brock also walked and Aldrich moved to second. Mark Fowler came up with an RBI single to right field and the Crushers scored the go-ahead, and eventual, winning run.
DeSimone went 3 2/3 innings for the Crushers and gave up six hits and two earned runs. Six pitchers came out of the Lake Erie bullpen and shut the Miners offense out. Matt Brankle (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning and picked up the win. Trevor Longfellow (13) shut the door in the bottom of the tenth to pick up the save.
Jarett Miller went eight innings, allowing only two runs on three hits and struck out eight. Scott Harkin (3-5) pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing the go-ahead run, while walking three and was saddled with the loss.
The Crushers will travel to O'Fallon, Missouri to begin a weekend series with the River City Rascals on Friday. The Crushers will start left hander Todd Kibby (1-2, 3.42) and River City will send lefty Lucas Laster (4-3, 4.26) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35.
