Molesky Goes Distance as Grizzlies Cruise Past Boomers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Grizzlies' rookie Vince Molesky tossed the team's first complete game of the season as Gateway took the first game of a three-game set from the Schaumburg Boomers, 8-2.

Molesky (5-6) allowed two runs and just seven hits while tossing 108 pitches. The rookie right-hander became the first Grizzlies' pitcher to throw at least eight complete innings since May 31.

Gateway's offense backed up Molesky early and often at Boomers Stadium on Friday night. Cody Livesay led off the game with a single against Schaumburg RHP Taylor Thurber and would score on Blake Brown's RBI single to make it 1-0.

After the Grizzlies (38-49) scratched across another run in the fifth, the Boomers (37-51) finally got to Molesky after four scoreless innings. Willi Martin started the inning with a single which was followed by Robbie Spencer's run-scoring double. Michael Valadez then laced a game-tying RBI double to tie the game at 2-2.

The Grizzlies struck right back in the sixth against Schaumburg RHP Lance Phillips (1-1). After loading the bases with two away, Ben Waldrip smacked a two-run single to left field. Brown then picked up his second RBI of the game with a single of his own.

The Grizzlies proceeded to tack on a run in the seventh They scored two more in the eighth on run-scoring hits from Seth Heck and Richard Seigel, which made the score 8-2.

The offense proved to be more than enough for Molesky, who finished with 10 strikeouts while walking no one. While Molesky shined, Schaumburg's pitching was victim of five errors by the Boomers' defense.

Waldrip collected four hits while Heck also picked up four of his own.

The Grizzlies and Boomers continue their series at 6:00 p.m. CT on Saturday at Boomers Stadium. The Grizzlies send LHP Dillon Haviland (2-2, 4.59 ERA) to the mound while the Boomers counter with RHP Evan Boyd (0-5, 5.44 ERA). First pitch is at 6:00 p.m.
