Crunch Release Mike Sgroi; Columbus Reassigns Kyle Wharton to Syracuse

Syracuse, NY (December 31, 2008) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that they have released left wing Mike Sgroi from his professional tryout contract. In addition, the Columbus Blue Jackets have reassigned defenseman Kyle Wharton from Johnstown (ECHL) to Syracuse.

Sgroi, 30, has appeared in three games with the Crunch this season, posting one goal and 14 penalty minutes. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Sgroi has also skated in four games for Johnstown this year, tallying two goals.

Wharton, 22, has appeared in five games for the Crunch this season, recording four penalty minutes. He has also skated in 16 games for Johnstown this year, registering two goals, six assists and 20 penalty minutes. A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Wharton was drafted by Columbus in the second round, 59th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

The Crunch's next game is Friday, January 2 as they travel to Hamilton to take on the Bulldogs.
