Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose closed out 2008 with an exciting New Year's Eve performance at the MTS Centre on Wednesday afternoon in front of 11,952 spectators. After a 6-2 loss to the Chicago Wolves on Tuesday night, the Moose battled harder and forced overtime to beat the Wolves 2-1. Maxime Fortunus scored the only goal in regulation time to earn second star honors, while former Wolves winger Guillaume Desbiens netted the overtime decider to earn first star of the game.
At 4:11 Joe Motzko, Chicago's leading scorer, netted his 22nd of the season against Karl Goehring by snipping the puck from the point.
A minute later, Grant Lewis was called for interference and Manitoba benefited from the game's first powerplay. A scramble in front of the net resulted in the Moose's first five shots of the game, but the club failed to slip the puck past Brent Krahn and Manitoba went 0-for-1 on the powerplay.
Manitoba's penalty killers made their debut at 16:06 when Daniel Rahimi was penalized for hooking. Although the visitors were able to tally three shots on Goehring, a few key saves and strong defense kept the puck out of the home net.
Mark Derlago's hooking call 1:34 into the second stanza put the Wolves on their second powerplay of the night, but it was cut short when Brett Sterling's interference penalty evened the odds. Neither team capitalized on their respective man-advantages and the game returned to five-on-five action.
Back-and-fourth play for the remainder of the period resulted in no goals, but the Moose were leading in shots 16-15.
At 7:15 of the final frame, former Wolves winger Guillaume Desbiens and Tyson Marsh dropped their gloves at centre ice to battle. Desbiens got the first blow and eventually brought Marsh to his knees before both players were handed five-minute fighting majors.
With a minute left on the clock and with an extra attacker the Moose knotted the game, with a slap shot courtesy of Maxime Fortunus to force overtime.
Overtime
With not even two-minutes off the clock in overtime, the Moose took the game with a former Wolves duo. Jason Krog's pass was completed by Guillaume Desbiens to put the Moose on top of the Wolves 2-1 to split their first and only home series against the club from Chicago.
