Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, Maine - Hungry people in Greater Portland are getting a little help from the Portland Pirates and the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Pirates and the Civic Center have joined the Pantry Project, a food gathering program organized by United Way of Greater Portland to benefit Preble Street and other food pantries in the area.
Please help us contribute to this worthwhile cause by bringing a food item to tonight's 5:30 p.m. game against the Norfolk Admirals. The Pantry Project wish list includes food items such as canned goods, pasta and rice, baby food, condiments, coffee and tea, sugar and more. Glass jars are also accepted.
The latest numbers for Maine show that one in five households in Greater Portland suffer food insecurity; families do not have certain access to food. More than half of these families are actually hungry. According to the survey, that means that 10% of people in Greater Portland do not have enough food in their home to make a meal.
In all, the United Way goal for the Pantry Project is to be able to provide 3,000 meals a month, or about 110 boxes of food. One box holds about 27 meals, or three meals a day for a mother and her two children for three days. Five different companies in Greater Portland will host Pantry Project shelves each month from December through June.
