Syracuse Crunch News Release

Syracuse, NY (March 16, 2011) - John Kurtz scored the home team's only tally on a shorthanded breakaway in the second period, but the Syracuse Crunch went on to give up five unanswered goals, four coming in the third period, in a 6-1 loss tonight to the Albany Devils at The Oncenter War Memorial Arena.

Recently-named AHL Player of the Week Chad Wiseman led the way for Albany with three points (1g, 2a), while Andy Thomas, Tim Sestito, Adam Henrique, Steven Zalewski and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond all also tallied for the visitors, who won their second game against the Crunch in a span of four days.

Albany mirrored their start from the previous meeting against the Crunch this past Sunday and jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead again inside the game's first three minutes.

J.P. Levasseur went to clear the puck up the middle, but his clearing attempt was picked off by recent ECHL call-up Thomas, who flicked a wrister on goal that eluded the Crunch netminder to put Albany up on top at the 2:45 mark of the first. The Devils scored 2:32 into the game on Sunday, also giving them an early 1-0 lead.

The Crunch tied the game after coming out hard to start the second and pulled even at the 2:25 mark when Kurtz took a feed from Nick Bonino while killing off a Mat Clark holding the stick penalty, raced up ice and beat his man to the outside. The Oakville, Ontario native then used his 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame to barrel towards the net and slip a shot through the legs of Mike McKenna to knot the score at 1-1.

Albany re-took the lead just over seven minutes later when Sestito re-directed an Olivier Magnan point shot past Levasseur to make it a 2-1 contest, which is how the game stood after two periods of play.

The third period was all Devils, as Albany got back-to-back power play goals from Henrique and Zalewski about halfway through the third, followed by two more quick strikes by Letourneau-Leblond and Wiseman at the 17:19 and 18:21 marks, respectively, making it a 6-1 final.

CRUNCHABLES: The Crunch gave up more than one power play goal in a game for the first time tonight since February 25 vs. Binghamton. The Crunch power play has been shut out over the last five games, going 0-for-23 over that span.Kurtz has two goals over his last five games after not scoring any in his first 30 games this season.
