Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars have won their first three series of the season, thanks to a 6-4 victory of the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,192 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars took three out of four from the Kernels and, at 7-3, have secured the 4th-best 10-game start in franchise history.
Â
Cougars starter Anthony Capra allowed one run over 4 1/3 innings but was unable to get through five innings because of his pitch count. The Cougars gave him a lead with a three-run fourth off Jayson Miller (1-1). Franklin Hernandez notched his first RBI of the year with a bases-loaded single, and Mitch LeVier knocked out a two-run single to make it 3-1.
Â
Josue Selenis (3-0) grabbed the victory. He took over for Capra in the fifth and worked into the eighth inning before allowing an unearned run and giving way to Kenny Smalley. In the bottom of the eighth Hernandez roped a two-run single, and Steve Kleen scored on a double play to give the Cougars a 6-2 lead. Smalley served up a two-run homer in the ninth, but Jose Guzman recorded the final out for his third save to end it.
Â
The Cougars (7-3) are off Monday and start a four-game road series Tuesday night at 6:30 CDT against the Burlington Bees (2-7). Brett Hunter (0-0, 6.00) will take the hill for the Cougars.
