The Kane County Cougars used two big innings and pounded out 17 hits en route to a 15-2 thumping of the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva IL on Saturday night. The loss drops the Kernels to 6-3 and into a second place tie with the Cougars, one game behind first place Clinton in the MWL standings.
Kernels starter Will Smith retired the first two batters he faced and then was lifted due to injury. His status is not known at this time. Reliever Christian Scholl allowed a run on four hits and struck out two over 3.1 innings in relief of Smith. Kevin Nabors (0-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits over 1.1 innings.
The Kernels struggles at the plate continue as they were held to just six hits. Tyson Auer doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and Jon Townsend was 1-4 with an RBI single in the second. Matt Crawford, Gabe jacobo, Angel Castillo and C.J. Bressoud each had a single to account for the Kernels six hits.
Kane County starter Pedro Figueroa (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out eight over five innings for the win. Mitchell LeVier was 2 for 5 with a double and 4 RBI and David Thomas was 3 for 6 with a HR and 3 RBI.
