Kane County Cougars News Release

BELOIT, Wisc. - The Kane County Cougars used Travis Banwart's seven-inning complete game in Game 1 and a five-run fifth-inning offensive outburst in Game 2 to propel themselves to a doubleheader sweep against the Beloit Snappers on Saturday afternoon at Pohlman Field. The Cougars, who won, 3-1, and 6-3, can sweep the season-opening four-game series Sunday in the finale.

The Cougars never trailed in Game 1, thanks to Todd Johnson's RBI-single in the second, which brought home another run after a Beloit error. Jake Smith's run-scoring connection in the following frame made it 3-0, and the lead stood behind Banwart's gem. The right-hander gave up one run on five hits, walked one and fanned four en route to his first professional complete game.

In Game 2 Beloit struck first in the second against spot starter Brad Hertzler, but Corey Brown's long homer to lead off the fourth made it 1-1. After the Snappers went ahead in the bottom half, 2-1, the Cougars batted around in the fifth. Johnson smoked an RBI double, Matt Ray did the same and Michael Lissman launched a two-run triple off the fence for a 6-2 affair. Reliever Scott Deal (1-0) picked up the victory and gave up a sixth-inning solo shot for his only blemish, and Scott Moore recorded the final out for his first save.

The Cougars (3-0), off to their best start since 2004, go for the sweep Sunday afternoon at 2 CT when Jamie Richmond opposes Daniel Berlind of Beloit (0-3).
