Great Lakes Loons News Release
Tood Frazier's solo home run in the tenth was the difference in the Dayton Dragons' first victory of the 2008 season as they defeated the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond in front of 3,610 fans by a score of 4-3.
The Loons got on the board first during a two-run fifth inning thanks to an RBI triple by outfielder Jovanny Rosario. Designated hitter Jamie Ortiz followed with a run-scoring double to make it 2-0. Dayton would quickly answer in the sixth when Dragons third baseman Brandon Waring continued his hot hitting in the series by lining a two-run single to left field to tie the score at two.
In the eighth, The Dragons would take the lead off of the Loons bullpen when Thomas Melgarejo allowed the first two Dayton hitters he faced to reach base before giving way to Matt Sartor who allowed a Denis Phipps RBI single to make it 3-2.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Loons would come back to tie the score thanks to a long home run by Preston Mattingly, a solo shot, his first of the season.
The Loons had a scoring chance in the ninth with runners on first and third with two outs for Rosario. The center fielder would launch a deep fly ball into the left-center field gap, but a great running catch by Dragons center fielder Justin Reed in left-center ended the Loons' hopes for a ninth-inning victory.
In the tenth, Dayton shortstop Todd Frazier belted Sartor's 3-2 offering into the left-field lawn seats for a solo home run.
The Loons had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the inning to tie and possibly take the lead when Great Lakes put runners on the corners with one out for Brian Mathews. The first baseman sharply grounded to left side, but a diving stop by Dayton third baseman Brandon Waring started an around-the-horn double play, just beating Mathews to first to end the ballgame.
Kyle Smit started for the Loons throwing five innings of very good baseball allowing two hits and no runs while striking out six. Melgarejo pitched two innings of relief and was allowed three Dragon runs to score. Sartor (0-1) pitched three innings striking out six batters, but allowed the home run to Frazier for his first loss of the season.
Dayton improves to 1-2 while the Loons fall to 2-1.
The Loons-Dragons series concludes from Dow Diamond Sunday afternoon. Game time is 3:05pm. Steven Johnson is scheduled to start for the Loons. The Loons will celebrate Family Fun in the SUNday as kids can run the bases following the ballgame, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance.
