Dayton Dragons News Release
Midland, Mich.-Todd Frazier lined a tie-breaking home run in the top of the 10th inning and third baseman Brandon Waring started a sparkling game-ending double play in the bottom of the inning as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 4-3 on Saturday night. The win was the Dragons first of the year after losses on Thursday and Friday.
Frazier's line drive home run to left field was his first of the season and gave the Dragons a 4-3 lead. The home run by Frazier followed a game-saving tumbling catch by Dragons center fielder Justin Reed in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run at third base.
In the bottom of the 10th, Great Lakes' Preston Mattingly reached first base on catcher's interference with one out and then went to third on a base hit to right by Andrew Lambo. The next batter, Brian Mathews, hit a hard ground ball that Waring fielded with a diving stop to his left. Waring threw from his knees to second base and Angel Cabrera's return throw to first completed the double play to end the game.
The Dragons trailed 2-0 after five innings before tying the game in the sixth. Brandon Menchaca started the rally with a hit to center and went to second on a wild pitch. Frazier walked with one out and Waring followed with a base hit to left. Menchaca scored easily from second and Frazier hustled around second when Lambo bobbled the ball in left. Frazier sprinted around third and beat the throw to the plate to tie the game.
The Dragons took a brief lead in the top of the eighth when Reed reached on a bunt single, went to second when Frazier walked, and scored on a two-out single by Denis Phipps to make it 3-2.
Mattingly homered in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 3-3.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Great Lakes' Scott Van Slyke at third, and the score still tied at 3-3, Jovanny Rosario hit a deep fly ball to left center field. Reed sprinted over from center to make a tumbling catch on the warning track and send the game to the 10th inning.
Dragons reliever Joseph Krebs tossed three innings, allowing one run on the homer to Mattingly, to earn the win. Enerio Del Rosario pitched the bottom of the 10th for his first save.
The Dragons and Loons meet again Sunday at 3:05 at Dow Diamond in the finale of the four game series. Left-hander Andrew Bowman will start for the Dragons against Great Lakes right-hander Steven Johnson. The game can be heard on 1410 ESPN Radio WING and at www.daytondragons.com.
