Cougars Stumble in Finale vs. Bandits

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars dropped the finale of a five-game series, 9-5, against the Quad Cities River Bandits on Monday afternoon in front of 6,026 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. All five Cougars pitchers allowed at least one run, and the team lost three of the five in the set and has dropped eight of the last 13 overall.
Ryne Tacker made his professional debut as the Cougars' starting pitcher but gave up three runs in the opening frame and didn't return. The Cougars took him off the hook in the bottom half, though, courtesy of three straight run-scoring hits from Danny Hamblin, Greg Dowling and Jonathan Johnston.
The 3-3 scored remained until the fourth inning when reliever Nick Walters (1-1) yielded a run and then gave up one more during a two-run top of the fifth. Down 6-3, the Cougars tried to chip away in the seventh when Shane Keough tripled home Matt Ray, but the River Bandits managed three in the top of the ninth against Lance Sewell and Leonardo Espinal. Corey Brown led off the bottom of the ninth with his eighth home run of the season to account for the 9-5 final.
The Cougars (30-20) are off Tuesday and continue their nine-game home stand Wednesday night at 6 CT against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Scott Hodsdon (2-4, 3.80) will face Nathan Adcock (1-3, 3.47).
