Lugnuts comeback falls short in 6-5 loss

LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts fell behind early to the South Bend Silver Hawks and could not complete a late comeback, falling 6-5 to the visitors Monday night at Oldsmobile Park. The loss snaps Lansing's season high winning streak at seven games.
South Bend scored all of its runs against Lansing starting pitcher Trystan Magnuson. Magnuson loaded the bases in the first and then with one away, Taylor Harbin singled into left-center field to score Evan Frey, making it a 1-0 game. Chance Wheeless's groundout and Derrick Walker's single drove in two more runs to push the Silver Hawks' lead to 3-0.
After adding another in the second, South Bend struck for two more in the third to make it 6-0. Taylor Harbin doubled and scored on Wheeless's RBI single. Walker would later reach on a fielder's choice and come home when Ramon Ramirez bounced a single into center to give the Hawks a 6-0 advantage.
Lansing began to stage a comeback, as they scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 6-2.
The Lugnuts put two more on the board in the sixth to pull within two. Raul Barron led the inning off with a triple and scored when Cristian Beltre balked. John Tolisano later came home when Yohermyn Chavez singled into left-center, cutting the lead to 6-4.
Lansing threatened again in the eighth as Tolisano scored again on Eric Eiland's single that made it a one-run game. However the Lugnuts would leave a runner stranded at second base.
Beltre (4-4) got the win for the Silver Hawks, who notched their first victory over the Lugnuts this season in eight tries. He went six innings and allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on five hits.
Magnuson (0-6) took the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits in just three innings of work.
Evan Scribner got his fifth save of the year by recording the final five outs, all via the strikeout.
Lansing (28-23) will take Tuesday off before hosting the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday evening. Randy Boone (5-1, 1.71) will make the start for the Lugnuts. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
