Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits got multi-hit efforts from four different batters, three of which added two RBI each on Monday afternoon, knocking off the Kane County Cougars, 9-5, to take the game and the series on Memorial Day at Elfstrom Stadium.
Quad Cities (26-23) overcame a turbulent first inning in which an error on their lineup card caused them to lose their piggyback starter, but rebounded to make Eduardo Sanchez the first River Bandits hurler to win five games this season. Kane County (30-20) used five pitchers in the contest, all of which were touched for at least one run.
The game got off to a unique start that left the River Bandits and Cougars tied at 3-3 heading into the second inning.
Quad Cities got to Cougars' starter Ryne Tacker in the top of the first, spoiling the Rice product's professional debut. Pete Kozma and Charlie Kingrey reached base on back-to-back singles, and Paul Vazquez drew a two-out walk that loaded the bases. Matt Arburr followed suit with another free pass that forced in a run, and Domnit Bolivar added a two-run double that pushed the score to 3-0.
In the bottom of the opening frame, a mistake on manager Steve Dillard's lineup card might have cost the River Bandits the lead. Although Sanchez was the scheduled starter, his piggyback partner Thomas Eager was written as such on the lineup card. Kane County skipper Aaron Nieckula pointed it out to the umpires moments before first pitch, forcing Quad Cities to send Eager to the mound in a pinch. Eager hastily warmed up and walked the first batter of the game, while Sanchez was then brought in out of the bullpen. Sanchez promptly hit a batter with the first pitch he threw, putting two men aboard and eventually allowing the Cougars to mount a three-run rally that tied the score.
That score remained until the River Bandits jumped in front for good in the middle innings. Bolivar doubled in the fourth and scored on Adron Chambers' single to make it 4-3. Tommy Pham led off the fifth with a base hit to center, snapping an 0-for-23 skid, and proceeded to steal second base. Later in the frame Kane County intentionally walked Francisco Rivera with two away, but Vazquez made them pay by pulling a two-run double inside the third base line for a 6-3 advantage.
The score was 6-4 when Quad Cities added to the lead in the top of the ninth. Mike Folli opened the frame with a double and Kozma drew a one-out walk. Kingrey followed by ripping a two-run double to right, eventually coming home to score on a Cougars' error to make it a 9-4 ballgame.
Sanchez (5-1) became the first River Bandit to five wins, rebounding from a frantic first inning to throw four scoreless frames the rest of the way. His final line featured five innings, two runs, and five hits, including three strikeouts and one walk. Pete Parise (3) pitched the final two frames for the save, allowing a solo homer to Corey Brown in the bottom of the ninth.
Reliever Nick Walters (1-1) took the loss for Kane County, touched for two runs on four hits over three-plus innings of work.
