Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars had a 4-0 lead through four innings on Friday night against the Dayton Dragons at Elfstrom Stadium but it turned into an 8-4 loss. Leondy Perez notched a quality start but allowed 10 hits and was doomed by a few unearned runs in the loss, and the Cougars' offense did not register a hit past the fifth inning.
The Cougars scored two runs in third and two more in the fourth to build their 4-0 lead. In the third, Geulin Beltre singled and later scored on an error, and Angel Franco grounded out to bring home Travis Jones. Then Beltre drove in Gerard Hall and scored on a wild pitch for the four-run lead. The Cougars drew two walks for their only base runners after the fourth, and their final 10 batters were retired in order. Pat Doyle (3-2) got the win for Dayton.
Perez (1-6) had yielded two hits and no runs through four innings, but he gave up two unearned runs in the fifth and one unearned run in the sixth as the Dragons cut it to 4-3. Then Dayton erupted with five runs in the seventh for an 8-4 score that became final. Perez allowed four straight hits and departed and totaled six runs -- three earned -- on 10 hits in six-plus innings overall. Santiago Garrido gave up two runs in relief, and Allen Caldwell logged a 1-2-3 ninth in his Cougars debut.
The Cougars (26-35) and Dragons (30-31) continue the three-game series Saturday night at 6 CT. Leonel Santiago (4-6, 3.58) is scheduled to face Stalin Gerson (NR). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 5:45 p.m.
