Lansing Lugnuts News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Lansing Lugnuts (33-26) collected nine hits, six walks and received the benefit of an error and a hit batsman, but stranded 14 runners on base in a 5-2 series-opening loss to Cedar Rapids Kernels (29-32) on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Lugnuts fell to 1-3 on their Iowan road trip to Quad Cities and Cedar Rapids, suffering their fifth loss in seven games.
Lansing brought a 2-1 lead to the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Kernels tallied four runs against starter Daniel Webb (Loss, 4-5) and reliever Brandon Berl thanks to an error by shortstop Gustavo Pierre, a Rolando Gomez RBI single, a David Harris RBI groundout and a run-scoring wild pitch.
Neither team scored again, though the Lugs certainly threatened. The Blue Jays farm club left the bases loaded in the fifth inning, stranded two runners on base in the first, fourth, sixth, seventh, and ninth innings, and did nothing with a one-out Pierre triple in the eighth.
In all, Lansing's offense went 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
Kernels starter Heath Nichols (Win, 3-5) earned the victory, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and five walks in five innings.
Daniel Tillman pitched the ninth for his third save, coaxing a game-ending groundout from pinch-hitter Lance Durham with runners at first and third.
In the losing cause, Markus Brisker belted his second home run of the season, K.C. Hobson drew three walks and went 1-for-2 and All-Star outfielders Jake Marisnick and Marcus Knecht each collected a pair of base hits.
Lugnuts reliever Danny Barnes made quite the splash himself, pitching 2 1/3 innings and striking out seven consecutive Kernels batters. The Princeton product now has 47 strikeouts in just 26 2/3 innings.
The Lugnuts and Kernels play the middle affair of their series at 7:35 p.m. on Saturday night. Lansing's starter is still to be determined, while Cedar Rapids has tabbed right-hander Baudilio Lopez (0-1, 20.25).
The Lugnuts return home to Cooley Law School Stadium on Tuesday, June 14th, for a three-game series against South Bend. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
