Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs crossed the plate five times in the opening frame and never looked back in a 6-3 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks on Friday night in Peoria. Starter Angel Guzman did not allow a run or hit in two innings of work, which was his first appearance since he pitched for the Chicago Cubs on September 8, 2009. The win was Peoria's first on the current homestand and improved its record to 31-30 on the year. For the first time in four nights, the Chiefs got on the board before their opponent and did so in a big way. Peoria's first four hitters all reached and the Chiefs had a 3-0 lead before South Bend recorded an out en route to a five-run opening frame. Matt Szczur lined a single into left to begin the game and Pierre LePage singled into right against Silver Hawks' starter Jeff Shields. Ryan Cuneo made it 1-0 with a double into left-center field that scored Szczur before Greg Rohan brought LePage and Cuneo home with a double over Ender Inciarte in center. After Richard Jones struck out, Micah Gibbs sent a base hit into right field and advanced to second on the throw home. With two runners in scoring position and one out, Anthony Giansanti made it 5-0 with a two-run single into center. Peoria added a run to its advantage in the bottom of the third as the clouds opened up and rain began to fall. Giansanti led off with his second base hit of the contest and traveled to second on a fielding error by Silver Hawks' left fielder Chris Jarrett. Arismendy Alcantara kept his hit streak alive with a single to center field that put runners on the corners. With no outs, Kyung-Min Na made it 6-0 with a RBI single that made it 6-0 and knocked Shields out of the game. Keith Cantwell replaced the Silver Hawks' starter with two runners on, but got three quick outs to end the inning. Guzman and reliever Eric Jokisch cruised through the first four innings and combined to no-hit the Silver Hawks in that span, but South Bend avoided the shutout with a run on two hits in the fifth. Matt Helm ripped a double into right off Jokisch to lead off the frame before Raywilly Gomez grounded to Alcantara at short. Alcantara fielded the ball cleanly but threw it wide of first as rain continued to fall. Helm rounded third on the play and came home to make it 6-1 while Gomez advanced to second. With no outs, Ramon Castillo lifted a fly ball into right where Giansanti made the catch, then fired to third as Gomez tagged up. Although Gomez got a good jump, Giansanti's throw was right on the mark and Rohan made the tag at third base for the second out. After Jarrett reached on a fielding error by LePage, Roberto Ortiz grounded out to end the threat. South Bend continued to cut into Peoria's lead in the sixth as the rain lightened up and eventually came to a halt. Ender Inciarte drew a leadoff walk before Michael Freeman grounded into a force out at second base. Jokisch struck out Zach Walters for the second out, but Yazy Arbelo made it 6-2 with a RBI double to right. Arbelo's two-base hit scored Freeman from first and it was his league-leading 51st RBI of the season. After a scoreless seventh, South Bend knocked back-to-back doubles off Jokisch to continue its comeback, but it would not be enough. Inciarte lined a double into right field to lead off the inning and Freeman followed up with a RBI double down the left field line that scored Inciarte for the final run of the game. With one out, Larry Suarez replaced Jokisch and struck out Arbelo and Helm to end the inning. Guzman took a no-decision in his two innings of work. He struck out two hitters and did not allow a walk. Jokisch (7-0) earned his seventh win of the season in 5 1/3 innings pitched. He allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits while walking two with five strikeouts. Suarez pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and earned his first save of the year with Peoria. He allowed just one hit, struck out three batters, and did not allow a walk.
