Lansing Lugnuts News Release
DAVENPORT, IA - Drew Hutchison dominated to the tune of nine strikeouts in six scoreless innings and the Lansing Lugnuts (33-25) avoided a three-game sweep with a narrow 2-0 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits (33-27) on Thursday evening at Modern Woodmen Park.
For the first six innings, Hutchison (Win, 4-2) matched goose eggs with Quad Cities starter Trevor Rosenthal, who notched ten strikeouts of his own through six overpowering innings.
But Matt Nuzzo led off the seventh by lining Rosenthal's (Loss, 3-6) first pitch into the gap in right-center for a double. Jake Marisnick followed with an RBI triple to break the scoreless deadlock, and Marcus Knecht brought home Marisnick with an RBI double to give the Lugs a two-run lead.
The River Bandits' bullpen quickly ended the threat, but the necessary damage had been done.
Meanwhile, Quad Cities' offense was rendered helpless by Hutchison and relievers Dayton Marze and Steve Turnbull.
The first two Bandits batters, Michael Swinson and Joey Bergman, each singled to open the bottom of the first inning. Hutchison responded by striking out the next three hitters and setting down 13 in a row.
Chris Edmondson broke the spell with a one-out single in the fifth inning... and that, as it turned out, was the last time the River Bandits put a runner on base.
Marze relieved Hutchison in the seventh and struck out two in a pair of perfect frames, and Turnbull recorded the last three outs in succession to notch his 14th save.
Lansing opens a three-game series on Friday night at Cedar Rapids, with first pitch set for 7:35 p.m. and Lugs right-hander Daniel Webb (4-4, 6.00) opposite Kernels right-hander Heath Nichols (2-5, 5.30).
The Lugnuts return home to Cooley Law School Stadium on Tuesday, June 14th, for a three-game series against South Bend. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
