Dayton Dragons News Release
Geneva, Ill. - The Dayton Dragons sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run seventh inning to come back from a 4-0 deficit and defeat the Kane County Cougars 8-4 on Friday night. The Dragons have split the first four games of their current 10-game road trip and improved their first-half record to 30-31.
Kane County built a 4-0 lead through four innings, scoring two in the third and two in the fourth. The Dragons started back with two runs in the fifth. Jaren Matthews singled to start the inning and Jefry Sierra reached on an error with one out. A balk advanced the runners to second and third, and Billy Hamilton's ground out to second brought in Matthews. Devin Lohman then lined a single to center to drive in Sierra and make it 4-2.
The Dragons put together a two-out rally in the sixth to pull to within one run. David Vidal single to right and Matthews followed with a double to the right field corner that advanced Vidal to third. Vidal scored on the play when the throw back in to second got away.
The Dragons enjoyed a big inning in the seventh to take the lead. Sierra doubled to right to start the inning and went to third on Hamilton's single to right. Lohman's bunt single loaded the bases. Dominic D'Anna followed with a single off the glove of the first baseman into right field to bring in Sierra and Hamilton and give the Dragons a 5-4 lead. After Yorman Rodriguez and David Vidal walked to load the bases, Matthews singled up the middle to drive in two more runs, and Tucker Barnhart followed with a hit to center to bring in the fifth run of the inning and give Dayton an 8-4 lead.
Pat Doyle (3-2) worked two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed no hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Jamie Walczak and Drew Hayes each pitched a scoreless inning following Doyle.
Dayton collected 13 hits. Matthews was 3 for 4 with two runs batted in. Lohman was 3 for 5 with an RBI. Hamilton and Vidal each had two hits.
Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Tuttle worked the first five innings, allowing four hits and four runs (two earned) with one walk and five strikeouts.
Dayton (30-31) will play at Kane County (26-35) again Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the second game of a three-game series. Stalin Gerson will be added to the roster from extended spring training to make his Midwest League debut for the Dragons. The Dragons next home game is Friday, June 17 vs. the Lansing Lugnuts.
