Strong pitching leads to Kernels 5-2 win over Lansing

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Kernels scored four times in the 4th inning and downed Lansing 5-2 on Friday at Perfect Game Field. Heath Nichols (3-5) picked up the win while the bullpen trio of Donn Roach, Dakota Robinson, and Daniel Tillman pitched four scoreless innings to secure the victory.

Lansing struck first in the 1st inning with an unearned run off of Kernels starter Heath Nichols. Leadoff hitter Markus Brisker reached on an error by shortstop Roland Gomez to begin the game. He later scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Jake Marisnick, giving the Lugnuts a 1-0 lead.

The Kernels evened the score in the 2nd inning. Lansing starter Daniel Webb walked Brandon Decker and Marcus Nidiffer to begin the inning. Decker later scored on a RBI single by Jesus Campos, knotting the game 1-1. The Lugnuts took the lead back in the 3rd inning on a solo home run by Brisker, making the score 2-1 Lansing.

The Kernels brought nine men to the plate in the 4th inning, plating four runs and taking a 5-2 lead. Webb hit Marcus Nidiffer and walked both Wes Hatton and Campos to load the bases. Lansing then brought in reliever Brandon Berl. Nidiffer scored on a fielding error by Gustavo Pierre off the bat of Witherspoon to tie the game 2-2. Rolando Gomez then singled home Hatton to give the Kernels a 3-2 lead. Campos scored on a RBI groundout by David Harris, making it 4-2 Kernels. Then, Travis Witherspoon made it 5-2 when he scored on a wild pitch by Berl.

Webb (4-5) took the loss after going 3.1 innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits. He struck out two and walked five. Nichols (3-5) went five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out five and walked five.

Roach, Robinson, and Tillman combined to pitch four scoreless innings. Roach went two innings and allowed three hits while striking out two and walking one. Robinson went one innings and allowed one hit while striking out two. Tillman picked up his 3rd save by throwing the 9th and allowed one hit and striking out one. Berl pitched 2.1 innings for Lansing and allowed one unearned run on four hits while striking out two and walking one. Danny Barnes pitched 2.1 hitless innings. He struck out seven Kernels in a row at one point.
