Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - The first-place Kane County Cougars opened up a nine-game home stand on Saturday night and did so in victorious fashion, beating the Burlington Bees, 6-4, in the start of a three-game series at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars have won all six of their 2nd Half series openers and maintain a one-game lead atop the Western Division.
Though they did see a four-run lead disappear, the Cougars never trailed. Alex Llanos scored on a wild pitch by Sean Murphy (0-3) in the bottom of the first and then scored on an RBI double by Brett Eibner in the third to make it 2-0. Eibner came home on a Burlington error, and Cheslor Cuthbert notched a sacrifice fly to plate Brian Fletcher for a 4-0 Cougars lead.
Starter Yordano Ventura was cruising along until the Bees rallied for four runs in the fourth inning. Then Ventura left due to injury with one out in the fifth and ended up with a no-decision. He gave up four runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Allen Caldwell (3-0) entered and silenced the Bees with 3 2/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief and seven strikeouts, and he earned the win. Cuthbert doubled Fletcher in the sixth, and Geulin Beltre scampered home on a wild pitch in the seventh for the 6-4 final. Nick Rogers nailed down his second save with a scoreless ninth.
The Cougars (11-5, 39-46) and Bees (6-10, 51-35) play Game 2 of the series Sunday afternoon at 1 CT. Jason Adam (2-4, 4.24) is scheduled to face Nate Long (5-2, 2.81). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 12:45 p.m.
