LumberKings Use Big Innings to Crush Kernels, 11-3

Clinton, IA - The LumberKings scored six runs in the 1st inning and five more runs in the 8th inning to whip the Kernels 11-3 on Friday evening.

The LumberKings shot out of the gates with six runs on four hits and two Kernels errors in the 1st inning. Carlos Ramirez singled to left to lead off the inning. With one out Mickey Wiswall singled to center. Runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd base on a throwing error by Kernels center fielder Chris Giovinazzo. Kernels starter Brian Diemer then hit Stefen Romero to load the bases. A grounder off the bat of Tim Morris went through the legs of Kernels 1st baseman Jeremy Cruz and into right field, scoring Ramirez and Wiswall and giving Clinton a 2-0 lead. Mike McGee then singled to left to score Romero and make the score 3-0. Kevin Rivers then doubled home Morris and McGee to extend the LumberKings lead to 5-0. Rivers went to 3rd base on a groundout by Anthony Phillips and scored on a balk by Diemer on the mound, making the score 6-0.

The Kernels cut the LumberKings in half with three runs in the 6th inning. Jean Almanzar and Giovinazzo led off the inning with back to back singles, putting runners at the corners. Almanzar scored on a RBI groundout by Rolando Gomez, to make the score 6-1. Cruz then singled, moving Giovinazzo to 3rd base. Cruz then stole 2nd base to put two runners in scoring position. Justin Bass drove home both Giovinazzo and Cruz with a single, cutting Clinton's lead to 6-3.

Brian Diemer (7-6) recovered after the rough 1st inning to go seven innings for the Kernels. He didn't allow a run after the 1st inning. At one point he retired 18 LumberKings in a row. He left the game allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out three.

Clinton put the game out of reach with five runs in the 8th inning. Kernels reliever Justin La Tempa hit Matt Browning to begin the inning. Mickey Wiswall then singled. With one out, La Tempa threw a wild pitch to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Tim Morris was intentionally walked, and the Kernels brought in Donn Roach out of the bullpen. Mike McGee drew a bases loaded walk, allowing Browning to score and give the LumberKings a 7-3 lead. Kevin Rivers delivered a RBI sacrifice fly, scoring Wiswall and making the score 8-3. Anthony Phillips walked to load the bases again. Carlton Tanabe then singled to center, scoring Morris and McGee. Kernels 1st baseman Jeremy Cruz's throw to 3rd base was wild, and Phillips was able to score and give Clinton an 11-3 lead.

La Tempa went 0.1 inning, allowing three runs on one hit while striking out one and walking one. Roach went 0.2 inning, allowing two runs (one earned) one hit while walking two. Tony Butler (1-0) picked up the win for Clinton in 5.1 innings of work. He allowed three runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking one. Tyler Burgoon recorded his second save in two scoreless innings.

The Kernels begin a nine-game home stand on Saturday evening against the Peoria Chiefs at 6:35 p.m. It's Harry Potter Night at the stadium.
