Two Streaks: One Good, One Bad

July 9, 2011 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Dayton, OH - On a night when the Dayton Dragons recorded their 815th consecutive sellout - a North American professional sports record - the South Bend Silver Hawks saw a streak of their own continue. Unfortunately for South Bend, their streak is seven straight losses and four straight games of scoring only one run as they fell 4-1 on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field.

The Dragons streak was celebrated all night in front of 8,688 fans, highlighted by a five minute video and on-field celebration complete with streamers and balloons. There will be no party favors in the Silver Hawks locker room however, as the team searches for answers for the second half offensive swoon.

Jeff Shields (LP, 4-9) was the latest Silver Hawks pitcher to not receive much run support, losing for the third time in his last four starts. Shields allowed four runs (two earned) over 7.0 innings with three strikeouts and no walks.

Dayton jumped ahead in the first thanks largely to the speed of Billy Hamilton. He led off with a single, stole second for his 62nd steal of the year, and then forced an errant pickoff throw from Shields to move to third. Ronald Torreyes brought him home with a ground out for the 1-0 lead.

Yazy Arbelo tied the game in the top of the second, blasting an opposite field home run to left against Daniel Renken (WP, 4-8). Arbelo's blast was his league leading 21st this season, and he is now tied for third on the Silver Hawks single season home run leader board.

Dayton answered immediately when Donald Lutz took the first pitch from Shields in the bottom of the second out to right-center, giving the Dragons a 2-1 lead. The Dragons scored two unearned runs against Shields in the fourth inning, with errors by Shields and right fielder Roberto Ortiz leading to the insurance runs.

South Bend was held to just one run on six hits on the night, two of which came from catcher Raywilly Gomez. After South Bend scored 15 runs last Saturday versus Lake County, the team has managed just 14 total runs over the last seven games. They've been held to just one run on five separate occasions during the current seven game losing streak.

The Silver Hawks and Dragons continue the three game series on Sunday afternoon with a 4:00 PM Eastern Time first pitch. South Bend gives the ball to RHP Bradin Hagens (4-3, 4.31 ERA) while Dayton counters with RHP Kyle Lotzkar (0-1, 6.39 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 3:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
