Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had faced Quad Cities River Bandits starting pitcher Zach Russell three times during the 2011 season before taking him on again on Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park. In the previous three matchups, the Rattlers had hit five homers, scored 12 runs, and handed Russell two losses in 12-2/3 innings of work. The story was much different on Saturday. Russell pitched seven shutout innings and combined with two other pitchers for a 4-0 win over Wisconsin.
Kelton Wong, the #1 pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2011 draft, singled to start the Quad Cities first inning. He stole second and went to third on a throwing error. A sacrifice fly by Oscar Tavares sent Wong home with the first run of the game.
The River Bandits (48-37 overall, 8-8 second half) played long ball in the bottom of the second inning. Cody Stanley and Packy Elkins both hit solo homers off Wisconsin starting pitcher Brooks Hall in the frame and Quad Cities went up 3-0.
Ronny Gill doubled in a run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 4-0.
Wisconsin (46-40, 8-8) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth inning against Russell. The River Bandits right-hander got out of the inning with a strikeout and a fly ball to keep Wisconsin off the scoreboard.
Russell left after seven innings. He struck out six and walked one while allowing just three hits. Russell retired the final eight batters he faced.
Iden Nazario and Aidan Lucas each pitched an inning out of the bullpen to hand Wisconsin its sixth shutout of the season.
Cody Hawn extended his hitting streak to ten games with a single in the top of the fifth. The other Rattlers hits were also singles. Chang followed Hawn in the fifth with a single. Nick Shaw became the Rattlers first base runner with a single in the top of the fourth after Russell retired the first nine batters he faced in the game.
Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park. Jimmy Nelson (4-7, 4.54) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities has Boone Whiting (1-1, 1.76) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm.
