Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars used two different rallies to beat the Clinton LumberKings, 6-4, Monday night. They scored twice in the sixth and four times in the eighth to grab the series finale in front of 5,272 at Elfstrom Stadium. Jeremy Barfield nailed a two-run single in the eighth to tie it, and Steve Parker drove in the winning run to help the Cougars avoid a four-game sweep.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Tyler Ladendorf singled home Leonardo Gil and Mike Spina belted a sacrifice fly to make it 2-2. That took starter Murphy Smith off the hook for a hard-luck loss. Smith gave up two runs on seven hits over six innings in his longest outing and first quality start.
The LumberKings managed two in the eighth against Josue Selenis, forcing the Cougars to rally in the bottom half. Barfield's two-out single scored Gil and Nino Leyja, and Parker's base hit brought home pinch-runner Chris Berroa for a 5-4 lead. The LumberKings' fifth error of the game later in the inning scored Parker for the 6-4 final. A.J. Huttenlocker (1-1) notched the win, Justin Murray posted his 11th save and Matt Renfree (2-2) took the loss.
The Cougars (21-23, 62-52) continue their eight-game homestand Tuesday night at 6:30 CT with the first of four against the Quad Cities River Bandits (20-23, 50-62). Kenny Smalley (9-4, 2.20) will face Scott McGregor (5-8, 6.05).
