South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - Timely hitting and strong starting pitching were two key factors in South Bend's 5-4 win over Fort Wayne in the series finale on Monday night. A.J. Pollock had a double, a two-out triple and three RBIs to pace South Bend. With the win, South Bend took three of four games against the league's best team.

Fort Wayne jumped out to a 1-0 advantage against RHP Ryan Cook (WP, 9-9) as Jaff Decker singled and scored on an Allan Dykstra single. A double play on a lineout to Jake Elmore ended the threat and the inning for Fort Wayne.

The momentum seemed to shift to the South Bend side following the double play, as the Silver Hawks came back with three runs in the bottom of the second. A single by Alfredo Marte and walks by Chris Davis and Jake Elmore loaded the bases for A.J. Pollock with two outs. Pollock proceeded to drive an Erik Davis (LP. 11-6) pitch into the right-center alley, glancing off the glove of Fort Wayne center fielder Blake Tekotte and clearing the bases for the 3-1 Hawks lead.

The Silver Hawks added to the lead in the very next frame. A one-out solo home run by Justin Parker extended the Hawks lead to 4-1. The home run was Parker's third of the season.

South Bend scored for the fifth time in the home half of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Rossmel Perez, pushing the lead to 5-1. The TinCaps would match that run with one of their own in the top of the eighth. A one out walk to Yefri Carvajal by Victor Capellan (ND) later came in to score on a fielder's choice from Tekotte to make it a 5-2 game.

The insurance run for South Bend would prove to be the difference as things got dicey in the top of the ninth. Justin Mace (SV, 8) allowed a lead off walk to Daniel Robertson, but then got the next two outs with relative ease. With Fort Wayne down to their last strike and the crowd on its feet, Allan Dykstra crushed a two-run homer to right, pulling the TinCaps within one. Mace would record the final out to preserve the win for the Hawks.

Cook, who was previously 0-4 against the TinCaps this season, pitched his best ballgame of the season against Fort Wayne, going six strong innings, giving up just the one run on four hits.
