Bees come back from four down to defeat River Bandits

Burlington, IA (August 10, 2009) - The Burlington Bees came back from a 5-1 deficit to defeat Quad Cities 7-5 Monday night at Community Field. David Wood had four RBI in the game and Riquy Pena pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to win his second game of the year. With the win, the Bees split the four-game series with the River Bandits.

The Bees scored the first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the first inning. Fernando Garcia led off with a triple and then scored on a one-out David Wood RBI ground-out. Quad Cities went on to score the next five runs scoring two in the second and three in third inning to take a 5-1 lead.

The Bees began to claw back scoring one run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the third, Garcia singled, moved to third on an Adrian Ortiz single and then scored on a David Wood sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Shawn Griffin doubled, moved up to third on a ground-out and scored on a two-out Jason Morales singled. In the fifth, David Wood walked with two outs, moved to third on a Nick Francis single and then scored on a Griffin double.

The Bees took the lead scoring three runs in the sixth inning. Ryan Wood led the inning off with a singled and moved to second on a ground-out. Patrick Norris then singled, which moved Ryan Wood to third. Garcia then walked to load the bases. Ortiz came to the plate and hit into an RBI ground-out, which scored Ryan Wood and tied the game 5-5. David Wood then doubled, which scored both Norris and Garcia and gave the Bees their 7-5 lead.

Manauris Baez was the starting pitcher for the Bees. In four innings, he allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Pena picked up the win to move to 2-2 on the season. He threw 2.1 shutout innings allowing just one hit with four strikeouts and one walk. Justin Garcia, just back up from Idaho Falls, pitched 1.2 shutout innings allowing one hit for his third hold of the season. Barry Bowden pitched a scoreless ninth inning allowing one hit with two strikeouts for his ninth save of the season.

Both the Bees and River Bandits had 11 hits. Garcia, Griffin and Morales each had two hits. Garcia scored three runs while David Wood drove in four runs. The Bees committed the only two errors of the ballgame.
