Kane County Cougars News Release

DAYTON, Ohio - The Kane County Cougars had an early lead and then a late lead Saturday night against the Dayton Dragons, but a four-run seventh inning by the home club handed the Cougars a 7-5 loss in front of 8,899 at Fifth Third Field. Dusty Coleman and Grant Desme each had two hits, including a homer, to lead the offense. The three-game series is now even at one game each.    Desme's homer came in the second off Curtis Partch for the game's first run. Then Dayton took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half against Cougars starter Shawn Haviland, who struggled early but settled down to allow just an unearned run the rest of the way over 5 2/3 innings. He yielded six hits, walked four and fanned one in a no-decision.    Down 3-1 after five innings, the Cougars scored rallied for four runs over the next two innings to take a 5-3 lead. Coleman belted a two-out, game-tying two-run homer in the sixth, and he and Jason Christian each drove in one more run in the seventh for a 5-3 game. But Josue Selenis (4-1) struggled in the bottom of the seventh, allowing one run and leaving with the bases loaded before Kevin Coddington doubled home three against Scott Deal. The 7-5 score became the difference after Aguido Gonzalez pitched the final two frames for his third save. Scott Gaffney (2-1) notched the win.    The Cougars (18-11) and Dragons (8-21) conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 CDT. Pedro Figueroa (2-1, 5.31) will face Oscar Castro (1-1, 5.40). It is also the finale of a road trip for the Cougars, who are off Monday and open a four-game series at home Tuesday.
