Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - Midwest League home run leader Kyle Russell added to his total twice Sunday, but it wasn't enough for the Great Lakes Loons to avoid a sweep at the hands of Burlington. The Bees won their fifth straight by a final of 5-4. The afternoon featured a pregame youth baseball/softball clinic and a postgame kids run the bases, both events presented by Farm Bureau Insurance.
For the second straight game, Nick Francis drilled a first-inning home run against the Loons. The Bees led 3-0 after the top of the second and never trailed in the contest, although the Loons twice pulled to within one run.
The first time was at 4-3 in the sixth following Russell's first home run, an opposite field solo shot. The next time was in the ninth, again on a solo home run by Russell, this time down the right field line.
Later in the ninth, Alfredo Silverio singled and Anthony Hatch walked with one out to put the potential game-tying and winning runs on base. But Matt Wallach fouled out to the catcher and Parker Dalton struck out to end the game.
Hatch finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored. Jaime Pedroza struck out four times and ended his hitting streak at 10 games. Dee Gordon went 1-for-1 with a two hit batsmen, but was ejected in the fifth, arguing with base umpire Adam Schwarz after Burlington starter Blaine Hardy picked him off first base.
Hardy (2-2) picked up the win and extended his walk-less streak to 28 2/3 innings. Justin Miller (2-2) recorded the loss, his second of the year.
The Loons with an off day Monday before returning to action Tuesday evening against the first-place Fort Wayne TinCaps. Right-hander JonMichael Redding (4-1, 5.28) will pitch against right-hander Anthony Bass (2-2, 3.14). Game time is 7:05pm. The game is a Dollar Family Feast Night, presented by Chemical Bank, with $1 prices on hot dogs, ice cream sandwiches and 12 oz. sodas.
