Bees Score 17 Runs in Win over Loons

Midland, MI (May 9, 2009) - The Burlington Bees put up a season-high 17 runs and defeated Great Lakes 17-12 Saturday night. The Bees scored a season-high ten runs in the third inning. With the win, the Bees have won four in a row and also have won their second consecutive series.

The Bees opened the scoring in the top of the first when Fernando Garcia and Eric Hosmer each singled with one out. Nick Francis then came to the plate and hit a three-run homerun to give the Bees the lead. Great Lakes answered with four runs in the bottom of the first to take their first lead of the game. The Bees were then able to tie the game up by scoring one run in the top of the second on a Nick Van Stratten double, which drove in Salvador Perez.

Great Lakes scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning but their lead was short-lived. The Bees scored ten runs in the third inning and sent 13 batters to the plate. Van Stratten, Bonilla and Martin each had two RBI in the inning, which featured six hits and four walks given up by Loons pitching. Three separate Great Lakes pitchers appeared in the frame. The Bees added another run in the fourth inning on a Fernando Garcia single, which scored Bonilla.

Great Lakes continued to claw back scoring four runs in the second, three in the fifth and one in the eighth to get within three runs. The Bees then put the game away scoring two runs in the ninth inning. Antonio Jimenez hit a sacrifice fly to score Bonilla and Francis grounded into a Fielder's Choice to score Van Stratten.

Sam Runion got the start for the Bees. In three innings, he allowed six runs, four of which were earned, on six hits with one strikeout. Carlos Arias made his debut pitching two innings allowing five runs on six hits. Derrick Saito picked up the win to move to 1-1 after pitching four innings allowing one unearned run on one hit with four strikeouts and two walks.

The Bees had 16 hits in the game, which was one short of the season high. Bonilla had four hits while Garcia had three. Six Bees had multiple hits. Francis led the way with four RBI while Van Stratten had three. All but one Bee in the starting lineup had an RBI. Francis and Bonilla each scored three runs.

The Bees are in search of their first series sweep as they conclude the three-game series with Great Lakes Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05. Blaine Hardy is the scheduled starter.
