Kane County Cougars News Release

Fort Wayne, IN - The Kane County Cougars trailed 4-0 early, took a 5-4 lead and eventually lost 6-5 in 12 innings Thursday night against the Fort Wayne Wizards. Christian Vitters' three-run homer in the sixth gave the Cougars a brief advantage, but missed opportunities late in the game haunted the team, which is now 0-5 in extra innings this season.

Cougars starter Andrew Bailey -- making his second appearance and first start -- failed to get through the first inning. He allowed four runs -- two earned -- on one hit, walked four and left with two outs. T.J. Franco relieved him and was flawless for the next 4 1/3 innings, giving the Cougars' offense a chance.

Greg Dowling's third-inning single off Stephen Faris scored Jermaine Mitchell to make it 4-1, and after Matt Sulentic smashed a two-out, run-scoring single in the sixth, Vitters belted a three-run blast to make it 5-4. The lead didn't last long, as newcomer Derrick Gordon allowed a home run to the first batter he faced in the bottom of the sixth, which tied the score at 5-5. Gordon settled down to last 3 2/3 innings, allowing just the one run while striking out two. Scott Moore handled the next 2 1/3 innings before Branden Dewing (1-1) allowed an unearned run in the 12th to end the game. Derek McDaid (3-0) recorded the win.

The Cougars (6-25) and Wizards (16-14) conclude their four-game series Friday night at 5 CDT when James Heuser (0-1, 3.13) faces left-hander Nate Culp (4-1, 1.45). Then the Cougars will travel to Beloit for three games in two days against the Snappers.
