Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
P.J. Phillips hit his third home run in the last two games and Hank Conger added a solo HR and an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to send the Cedar Rapids Kernels to their fourth win in a row, 3-2, over the West Michigan Whitecaps in front of 7,821 fans at Fifth Third Field in Comstock Park, MI.
The win was the Kernels fourth in a row, which ties their season high. Kernels starter Doug Brandt (2-0) gave up a run on three hits and struck out six over six innings of work. P.J. Connelly and Warner Madrigal combined for two scoreless innings of relief and Barret Browning gave up a run on three hits, but got key batters out to pick up his first save.
Phillips home run led off the third inning and Conger's came with one out in the top of the fourth. The Kernels have hit five home runs over their past two games to raise their season HR total to 18. Mark Trumbo and Hank Conger put together back-to-back doubles in the top of the ninth to score a very important insurance run.
Marco Albano started at catcher for the first time in his baseball career. Despite a throwing error he played well and went 1-4.
West Michigan starter Angel Castro (3-2) allowed only four hits and two runs and struck out five over seven innings in taking the loss for the Whitecaps.
The Kernels improve to 17-13 as West Michigan falls to 17-15.
The final game of this series will be Friday night at 5:35 pm as David Herndon (4-1) starts for the Kernels against lefty Duane Below (2-1). The Kernels then play two games at Clinton before returning home to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Monday, May 14th to open an 11-day, ten-game home stand starting with two games against the LumberKings.
