Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons hit a season high six doubles Thursday night against the Peoria Chiefs at Fifth Third Field, but it was not enough. Peoria overcame a strong pitching performance by Dragons starter Travis Webb (LP, 2-1) to pick up the 2-1 victory and win their second game of the series.
The Dragons got a leadoff double in the first, and two out doubles in the third, sixth, and ninth innings without being able to push a run across. The only run Dayton scored on the night came on back-to-back doubles from Eddy Rodriguez and Chris Heisey with two outs in the seventh off of Alex Maestri (WP, 3-0).
On the other hand, Peoria managed just nine singles on the night. With one down in the top of the third, Yusuf Carter singled to left, and moved to second one out later on a balk by Webb. Alfred Joseph followed with an RBI single to center, and the Chiefs led 1-0. Peoria scored again in the seventh off of Pedro Viola (ND) on two singles and a sacrifice fly from Matt Canepa.
It truly turned out to be a game of inches for the Dragons on Thursday night as the second of two doubles by Drew Stubbs and the first of two doubles by Heisey missed leaving Fifth Third Field for home runs by a combined two feet. Dayton who has been very adept at getting home runs with two down did not have its usual success, scoring just one run with two outs despite five of the six doubles on the night coming with two outs in an inning.
Rocky Roquet (SV, 7) surrendered Heisey's second two base hit of the night with two down in the ninth but got Stubbs on a game ending ground out to preserve the win.
The Dragons and Peoria wrap up the series and the Dragons home stand Friday night at Fifth Third Field with a 7:00 PM first pitch. RHP Sean Watson (3-0, 1.69 ERA) will start for Dayton who will try to spilt the four game set, while the Chiefs will counter with RHP Jose Pina (0-3, 5.56 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM. The game will also be carried live on the internet via All-In Broadcasting at www.daytondragons.com.
